Another side of the hood, Mahboula January 22nd 2012

From Kuwait 2012
I haven't explored this side of our neighbourhood much yet.
There's still a huge construction going on at the main street and crossing this one is a pain in the behind (mud puddles, sand in your shoes, dirty dog paws, dust, ...).
The street is right in front of this building, the plot with trees behind me.

This day the trees and old Date palms lured me though.

From Kuwait 2012
Also the mounds and bushes, usually good territory for Shrikes, Wheatears and such fellows I wanted to check out if there were any birds.
Not much yet, I bet during migration a few fellows will stop by though.
We had the usual criminals: Laughing Dove, House Sparrow, I heard a White-eared Bulbul and saw two White Wagtails.

I was surprised to find some plants growing, not sure which is what, except for one.

And on my way back home I stumbled over this Lady, enjoying the cool morning and sunshine. This is a sight you rarely ever get. Women here do walk along the beaches or might sit on a bench, but more often you just see them sitting inside their cars and watch nature from there.

I also stopped at my favorite 'next door' trees.

The street construction workers are currently pouring their Leftover concrete everywhere. Underneath and besides the tree are some of those places. On one I could see the sparrows taking their baths after the rain - before the concrete :(
And of course, there's always the trash.

Not many birds around here, a few noisy fighting House Sparrows (well, the one in the photo stayed out of it and just enjoyed the cool sunshine), Laughing Doves, two Common Myna eyeing me curiously

Neighbourhood birds & plants, Mahboula

Some quick snaps from yesterdays dog walk to show you a bit of the 'wildlife' that's currently available in my beautiful neighbourhood ;-)

The usual criminals

House sparrow, Passer domesticus

White-eared Bulbul, Pycnonotus leucogenys

These guys are usually migrants, but some fellows stay over winter it seems.
We have around three of them staying here.
I thought I saw a Northern Wheatear the other day, but I am not 100% sure.

White Wagtail, Motacilla alba

This fellow was a bit strange. He didn't wag his tail at all. I've never seen a waggy before,
 not wagging it's tail.

We have some bats around too. At least two species.
I doubt I will ever catch a photo of them though ;-)

Some trees that survive the harshest conditions & trash surrounding them, the construction that goes on around here (new sewer system - the exit still seems to lead to the ocean, new streets, new houses - like we really need more. Yes, the skies are actually this blue right now. But it was very windy yesterday and the dust pretty bad. I got my nasty cough back. Either a virus or the dang dust.

From Kuwait
Stray cats and dogs in abundance - King & JoJo wanted to get this one, but she somewhat
knew she was save in the dense undergrowth of the trees

December tree

Some last 2010 shots for The Tree Year from my favorite tree and his surroundings.

The tree thinks it’s Spring time.  It sprouts some new branches. Many trees did blossom right after the summer heat, one day it smelled like a big meadow of flowers :)

The leaves are still dusty from the last storm. No rain in sight.

The tree in the afternoon sunshine. A bit tricky to catch with my 50mm, oh well :)

And sadly a bunch of trash, the most common sight in Kuwait. I will clean it up some some time this week.

Nearby: Merry Christmas :(

And a happier sight, tree unrelated: The poochies waiting for me to finish and a sunset visitor on our balcony ;)

The Tree Year 2011

Natalie aka Dreamfalcon has started a beautiful project for 2011.

The Tree Year Das Baumjahr

You pick one tree (in you garden, park, neighbourhood; small, big, wild, whatever) and you take photos of him around the year.

I said: I love this idea, but mine will look pretty much the same all year around.

She said: it doesn’t matter. Take close ups, show the bark, show the animals that live in it.

OK, can do that :)

So, here you go with a dusty version of one of my favorite trees in Kuwait (not that there are so many,… the little one to the right is a sibling, I think :) )

From Kuwait

There is another big one left of my favorite, much loved by Sparrows, Laughing Doves and BulBuls

From Kuwait

And since we have soooo many trees in Kuwait, they just recently cut the small trees (versions of my favorite big one) along the hedges. It only took them around 4 years to grow to that hight :(

From Kuwait

And along the beach side, they cut down a bunch of real nice, big trees. It’s part of the ‘cleaning up Mangaf beach project’, I guess. But I don’t have to understand why they have to cut down healthy trees that give gave shelter to many birds during migration and during the blistering summer heat. :(
