Neighbourhood birds & plants, Mahboula

Some quick snaps from yesterdays dog walk to show you a bit of the 'wildlife' that's currently available in my beautiful neighbourhood ;-)

The usual criminals

House sparrow, Passer domesticus
From Birds Kuwait 2011
White-eared Bulbul, Pycnonotus leucogenys
From Birds Kuwait 2011
These guys are usually migrants, but some fellows stay over winter it seems.
We have around three of them staying here.
I thought I saw a Northern Wheatear the other day, but I am not 100% sure.

White Wagtail, Motacilla alba
From Birds Kuwait 2011
This fellow was a bit strange. He didn't wag his tail at all. I've never seen a waggy before,
 not wagging it's tail.

We have some bats around too. At least two species.
I doubt I will ever catch a photo of them though ;-)

Water sources

Some plants that grow wherever you find some water

Some trees that survive the harshest conditions & trash surrounding them, the construction that goes on around here (new sewer system - the exit still seems to lead to the ocean, new streets, new houses - like we really need more. Yes, the skies are actually this blue right now. But it was very windy yesterday and the dust pretty bad. I got my nasty cough back. Either a virus or the dang dust.

From Kuwait
Stray cats and dogs in abundance - King & JoJo wanted to get this one, but she somewhat
knew she was save in the dense undergrowth of the trees

  1. You certainly live in an interesting environment. I'm glad you can find some birds in it - the Bulbul is the star for me.

  2. @mick - Interesting sums it up nicely ;-)
I love the Bulbuls too & the Mynas (for most people their are a 'noise'ence ;-)

@Carole Meisenhelter - one of my all time favorites around here :-)

  3. Interesting place, do you live in a city? You do see some nice birds there, Nicole. The Bulbul is my favorite too. I wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

  6. Great neighborhood stroll, especially love the wagtails (different bird for me) -- you showed the good and the bad parts very nicely. I hardly ever write about the parts of 'my world' that aren't so lovely, because when I do it sounds whiny. You manage it very well -- I expect everyplace in the world is a bit of a mixture.

Sorry 'bout the dust though -- that doesn't sound real healthy.

Good to see the birds there.

  8. @eileeninmd - Kuwait is actually more or less one big city with many separate areas. If one keeps their eyes open, they'll see some birds eventually. :-)

    @TexWisGirl - Thanks & so am I ;-)

@joo - interesting is relative. One has to watch out, that it doesn't get depressing :-)
I think the dogs might want to take up your offer when it gets warmer again ;-)

@Sallie (FullTime-Life) - Thanks :-) I always enjoy seeing the Waggies, they make me happy with their agile moves and tail wagging :-)
I tend to whine and bitch too, but before I press publish, most times I delete it again ;-)
But the showing it part already helps me a bit ;-)
Nope, dust ain't healthy. Got some medicine today, maybe it will help...

@holdingmoments - Kuwait is very 'interesting' indeed, Keith ;-)

  10. I enjoyed these shots from your walk. So many different birds. It's amazing how plants can grow in difficult natural situations. I enjoyed the things to make us smile too.

In some ways the construction reminded me of home because just when I think the development is surely done yet another corner of blessed trees gets cut down for yet another apartment or business building when there are already vacant ones. The difference though is compared to Kuwait we still have a lot of green and they do landscape the areas pretty fast as part of the construction here. Even so, I wish they'd stop until everything is full occupancy.

A friend and I used leave our husbands to stay home with the babies (my baby is 26 so this was a long time ago) and we'd go out late and put signs up with phrases, such as, the line from Joni Mitchell's song "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot" or some would say, TREES PLEASE. My friend's husband joked about how we were the gorilla girls. It was funny because one sign stayed up a long time. I guess the construction crew thought it was funny and left it up.

At least where I live they city does have a commitment to parks and trails along creeks, etc. I guess I'm spoiled and want it all. I do get tired though of continuing construction.

Please accept my best wishes for 2012 xx

  12. What an interesting walk through your neighborhood. Looks like lovely birds and plants can be found among the litter of construction. That stray cat looks like it lives a pretty harsh life.

  13. Your ability to adapt back and forth from Europe to Kuwait is mind boggling. Great finds on the birds, they are lovely. I'm glad you have your dogs to walk with!
    Happy New Year!

  14. @Gary - Thanks :)

@Carver - yes, it always amazes me too, how things can grow in the harshest conditions :)

I just tried to imagine you sneaking around at night, putting up signs :-D
Cool idea, but no point here.
Oh well, I try not to think about it too much.

@Andrew - Thanks! And all the Best for you and yours!

@Pat - Yes, the strays have it pretty tough here, especially when it gets warmer. Try to live outside in 55C :/

    @Springman - I think I am born with a 'Travel Gene' ;-)
Even while living 8 years in one city in Germany, I managed to move apartments 7 times ;-)

  15. Interesting wild life, Nicole. I guess you can never go wrong with house sparrows :-) And stray dogs and cats! I feel sorry for them. And all that plastic indestructible trash! Not a place for me. I wish you a happy and productive New Year, and am looking forward to more of your interesting posts!

  16. @Hilke Breder - I can't wait for migration to start and to see what Gems will stop along this place. Our old place was a bit farther 'down the road' uh coast :-)
Strays don't have an easy Life here, that's for sure.
And trash, well, no comment.... ;/
It can be a tough place for humans too, yup. My way of dealing with it, is showing it.
Sometimes something good comes from it, stuff gets cleaned up.
Best wishes to you as well!
